Eloquent PM mum on fanaticism: Sonia Gandhi | India News

Must read

UDAIPUR: Kickstarting the much-awaited three-day “Chintan Shivir”, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday accused the Modi government and BJP of “brutalising minorities” and pushing the country into a perpetual communal flux which, she argued, was the real meaning of PM Modi’s motto of “minimum government, maximum governance”.
Sonia accused the “ever so eloquent” PM of keeping mum on growing religious fanaticism when the country needs a “healing touch”. She also stressed the need for Congress to undertake organisational reforms and adopt new strategy to meet the “extraordinary challenges”.
In a scorching attack, she said, “The BJP, its cohorts and surrogates want to keep our people in a state of perpetual frenzy and conflict, permanent polarisation. They constantly provoke, instigate and inflame…”
Picking on Modi’s slogan of “Minimum Government, Maximum Governance”, Sonia said it translates into “compelling our people to live in a constant state of fear and insecurity, viciously targeting and brutalising minorities who are equal citizens of our republic”. She said the Modi slogan also means vendetta against political opponents, eroding the independence of institutions, reinvention of history, glorification of killers of Mahatma Gandhi, atrocities on weaker sections, and intimidation to control bureaucracy, corporates, civil society and media.
The inaugural address, which is seen as laying down the agenda for brainstorming and future “action plan”, was significant politically. The apparent reason behind the new-found aggression is to nudge political allies to shun their reluctance in calling out communalism, as also to set the “secular” bar higher to highlight the ideological contrast with bitter rivals who are also claiming membership of the anti-BJP bracket, like AAP and some regional parties including TMC.
